Cheese Sticks

Batons de Fromage

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese

  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese for sprinkling (optional)

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 3 tablespoons ice water

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 205°C. Sieve the white flour into a mixing bowl with the baking powder. Mix well.
  2. Combine the grated cheese with the flour and baking powder mix. Gradually blend in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add water and mix well into a semi smooth pastry. Roll pastry into sheets. The thickness can vary, depending upon your preferences. If you want solid sticks, increase thickness.
  3. Optional: If you are making thin twisted strips, sprinkle one side of the pastry sheets with some grated cheddar cheese. Gently press in by hand.
  4. Cut pastry sheets into 1 cm wide strips. The length can vary depending upon your preferences. If you make thin strips, you can gently twist the strips as shown in photo.
  5. Bake on an ungreased baking sheet for 8 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Keep an eye on the oven as the pastry can burn very quickly. Serve warm or cold.
